Hardware Compatibility

What we have actually booted FyshOS on, and what worked when we did. Every entry below comes from a real machine rather than a driver list — if something is missing from the table, nobody has reported it yet.

A machine that is not listed is not a machine we expect to fail — FyshOS is Debian based, so hardware with mainline Linux drivers generally just works. These are simply the ones we can vouch for.

The Detail

Notes and caveats for each machine we have tested

Lenovo ThinkPad X1

Carbon Gen 13

Fully supported

Everything we have tried works from the live image onwards, fingerprint reader included. This is the machine FyshOS is developed on day to day.

  • The fingerprint reader is picked up during installation and can be used to unlock the session as well as to log in after fingerprint enrolled.

Dell XPS

XPS 13 9300

Fully supported

An older machine with no known problems — wireless, sound, power management and the touch screen all come up on a stock install.

  • No firmware or driver steps are needed after installation; the machine is usable straight from the first boot.

Microsoft Surface Pro

7+ Core i5

Mostly supported

Boots and installs on the stock FyshOS kernel and is usable as a laptop. The camera does not work, and the touchscreen needs a different kernel.

  • Touchscreen and pen need the linux-surface kernel, which is not what FyshOS ships. Adding their Debian repository and installing linux-image-surface, linux-headers-surface, libwacom-surface and iptsd brings touch to life.
  • The camera does not work. Everything else on this list runs on the kernel that ships with FyshOS.
  • There is no fingerprint reader on the tablet itself — it is a Type Cover option rather than built-in hardware.
  • Installing alongside Windows needs manual partitioning, and the firmware boot order has to be changed afterwards. The full write-up covers both, step by step.
